ALGAE VECTIS, OR DRIED SPECIMENS OF MARINE PLANTS, PRINCIPALLY COLLECTED IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT, Carefully Named According to Dr. Hooker's British Flora. PREPARED AND SOLD BY E, WESTWOOD.
Seaweed Cottage, Ventnor, Isle of Wight: E. Westwood, Seaweed Ornament Manufacturer to Their Royal Highnesses the Duchess of Kent and the Princess Victoria , 1835. EXTREMELY RARE. We have been unable to find any reference to this work; not recorded on Copac or Worldcat. No date, but c. 1835. [reference to 'their Royal Highnesses the Duchess of Kent and the Princess Victoria' suggest pre. 1837 and Hooker's vol. 2 which covered the algae was first published in 1835.] Letterpress title page, followed by blank leaf and 49 further leafs with mounted specimen/s of a singe species to the recto of each leaf. Approximately 41 of these specimens with a pasted-on manuscript label with species name and reference to species in Hooker's work. Bound in original half red straight grained morocco with marbled paper boards, printed title label to the front board. Binding very good and strong with a little general wear and rubbing. Contents good and tight, original end papers, old silver-fish damage to some pages, though this now expertly and inconspicuously repaired using Japanese tissue and Methyl cellulose. Most of the specimens in very good condition, a few with small pieces missing, a little offsetting/staining of paper by some specimens. A superb and possibly unique item; the letterpress title page and title label suggest that multiple copies of this work were produced (or at least were intended to be produced), but this may well be the only copy to have survived. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 4to (22.5 x 28.5cm).
