"The first application of the Newton-Raphson process to the solution of transcendental equations was made by Thomas Simpson in his 'Essays' on Mathematicks', London, 1740" (Cajori, History of Mathematics, S. 227). "This thirteen essays discuss astronomy, mechanics, and mathematics, including topics such as the apparent places of fixed stars (Simpson claiming to have arrived at Clairaut's conclusion independently), true place of planets in orbits, the motion of projectiles in resisting media, pendulums, algebraic equations, method of increments, sum of recurring series, quadrature of hyperbolic curve, and other mathematical topics" (R&T). - Simpson (1710-1761), "a strange mathematical genius" (Smith), war ab 1743 Professor an der Royal Military Academy und ab 1745 Mitglied der Royal Society. Bekannt machte ihn die "Simpson'sche Formel", ein Verfahren der numerischen Integration. - Vereinzelt leicht stockfleckig. Titel mit hinterlegtem Randausschnitt.
