The Age of Louis XIV. (Lewis the XIV sic)
R. Dodsley, Pall Mall, London. 1752 - 2 volume set complete. Volume 1 comprises a portrait frontispiece copper engraved by Rigaud of the author another engraved portrait of the 18th century pasted into the first free endpaper. viii page prelims + 436 pages and a 16 page publishers catalogue at rear. Volume 2 has Copper engraved view as frontispiece and 292 pages + 90 page separate pagination of the children of Louis the XIV and an 20 page index all complete and collated. There is a small old armorial bookplate to each volume inside front board of Robert Osborne Esq. these have been trimmed close and the endpapers are new as are both spines, but sympathetically done in matching mottled or spotted calf. . The titles read as Lewis the XIVth as copying the spelling used by the printer on both title pages. (see photo scans). Printed on hand made rag paper, some pale old damp lines just visible on a few odd pages and some light spotting here and there, all tight clean and handsome set. Published in France in 1751 and translated quickly for the London market less than 9 months later. I believe the translation was by John Lockman. Rare. octavo. VG 1752.
