Picturesque New Guinea. With an historical introduction and supplementary chapters on the manners and customs of the Papuans; accompanied with fifty full-page autotype illustrations..
London: Longman's, Green, and Company, 1887. Joints and spine ends rubbed, but a very good copy preserved in a custom slipcase.. Octavo, autotype photographic plates; original gilt decorated cloth, recased with new endpapers; slipcase. First edition of this famous work, probably the most outstanding example of expedition photography undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere. This is an unusually good copy of this scarce book, more often seen in poor condition or in later binding, or both. Lindt, an accomplished professional photographer, accompanied the expedition that established Sir Peter Scratchley as the first British administrator of Papua New Guinea. Lindt's photographs are beautifully reproduced in this volume by the autotype process, probably still the most effective process for the mechanical reproduction of photographic images. The text of Lindt's volume includes his detailed account of the expedition and other material on Papua and the native population, including a section by G.S. Fort. From an ethnographic perspective, this book is a lasting visual record of coastal Papuan cultures now irrevocably changed. Longhouses, tree-houses and native sailing craft are all amply illustrated.
