Black Sparta: Greek Stories.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1928 - Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine gilt, publisher's device to rear board blind. With the bookplate of Herbert Boyce Satcher to front pastedown. Extremities lightly bumped, spine toned and slightly pulled, with a gentle crease. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author to classical scholar Gilbert Murray (1866-1957), closely adapting a passage from his translation of the Bacchae of Euripides: "What else is goodness, what of man's endeavours / Or God's high grace, so lovely, so great: / To stand from fear set free, to breathe & wait, / And shall not VIVIAN be loved forever? / Gilbert Murray / from Naomi Mitchison / Summer 1928". An excellent association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
