Cary's New and Correct English Atlas: Being a New Set of County Maps from Actual Surveys
John Cary, London 1787 - Advertisement Leaf; Title page; Dedication Leaf; Contents [47 Double-page Maps] (Directions) pp 17 [1] Cary's 1787 English Atlas in a most desirable contemporary wallet-style binding intended for use by Stage Coach Drivers. The binding is soft sheep over thick card covers with rubbing to the hinges but a very good example of this style of binding. The first blank has the inscription of the sculptor Henry Westmacott recording the book as a gift from his sculptor father, Richard: 'Henry Westmacott A Gift of his Father's in 1801.' Westmacott's initials also appear on the unprinted recto of the Dedication Leaf. After the preliminaries there follow the 47 double page maps, outlined in colour and bound sideways onto stubs. The volume concludes with the seventeen pages of Directions. As befits a volume intended for practical use this is the version that does not have the county summaries or list of subscribers. An engraver himself, Cary is highly regarded for the quality of the workmanship and the precision of his cartography. An excellent copy.
