The Evolution of the Universe
London: Macmillan & Co. First Edition. Fine. FIRST EDITION IN RARE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of one of Gamow's foundational papers on the Big Bang and the origin of the universe, leading to determinations of the age and temperature of the universe. "In his article in Nature on 'The Evolution of the Universe,' George Gamow presented... a visionary picture of the redshift in the spectra of distant galaxies, on the one hand, and the idea that the relative abundances of various atomic species constitute 'the most ancient archaeological document pertaining to the history of the universe' (Gamow, 1948, p. 680). From more detailed calculations of his student Ralph Alpher, Gamow drew some sharp consequences, such as: The building-up processes of the chemical elements must have occurred in the first thirty minutes where the temperature of the hot initial state had dropped to about 10^9 K and 'the expansion of the universe was governed entirely by radiation and not yet matter' (Gamow, loc. cit., p. 681). By evaluating further the time-dependence of the radiation density and the matter density, respectively, he argued that the formation of galaxies began once the densities had become equal. Alpher and Robert Herman then improved upon some of the sloppy errors in Gamow's theory and obtained an age of 10^7 years for the Universe at that moment; i.e., 'the temperature of the gas at the time of the condensation was 600 K, and the temperature in the universe at the present time is found to be about 5 K' (Alpher and Herman, 1948, p. 775)" " (Mehra, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory). IN: Nature, Vol 162, No. 4122, October 30, 1948, pp. 680-682. London: Macmillan & Co., 1948. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. A few light pencil notations to wrappers. A fine copy, very rare in original wrappers.
