London; W Herbert 2nd edition 1768 - Folio [text block 420 x 265mm], 73 plates as called for - double-page map, 8 plates of coats of arms and 64 double-page plates of country seats, (x), 452, (6)pp, contemporary full tree calf, rebacked in period style with gilt decorated raised bands, red lettering piece, the compartments with large gilt centres, corners, and stars, new hand-marbled endpapers. Ex-library with small blind stamp on lower margin of title-page and in lower corner of all plates but no other marks; corner of margin title-page torn with slight loss; small stain in margin pp232; small paper flaw margin of plate opposite pp243; paper flaw within plate mark, just affecting image, plate opposite pp368; tiny paper flaw in plate opposite pp407; index leaves creased. [Collates as Upcott pp246-250: 'The greater part of the impression of this work (the 1st edition of 1712) was destroyed by a fire, Jan. 30, 1712-13, in the house of Mr Bowyer, Printer, in White Fryars; and some of the copies which were rescued from the flames still retain the indelible marks. A part likewise of the second edition met with a similar fate.'] An almost crisp copy with few faults, now very handsomely rebacked. Will want extra postage. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
