Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d’Arlandes made the first manned balloon ascent in November 1783; the Montgolfier brothers had sent aloft some barnyard animals in September. On 15 June 1785 Pilatre de Rozier and Pierre Romain attempted to cross the Channel in a balloon filled with hot air and hydrogen. Blown off course and returning to France the balloon suddenly deflated and crashed near Wimereux, from a height of about 1500 feet, killing both men. Harington was at the take-off and at the crash site within an hour and somewhat gruesomely describes the fatal injuries to the two pioneers of early flight. He also adds a translation of a eulogy by the Marquis de Masonfort. The last part of the book is his translation of Extracts from the Registers of the Court of Parliament of Paris, with more gruesome details of crimes and the punishments that followed. Uncommon, with Copac citing only four institutional copies in the UK and ony two auction records in the last 30 years.
