India Photo Album with 262 Real Photographs, 1930.
1930 - Two loose leaf albums of the India portion of the Hamburg American Lines SS "Resolute" around the world cruise, beginning on February 10, 1930. Mr. Charles P. Staubach of Glen Ridge, NJ, assembled the albums.The photos are a mixture of personal snap shots and photos taken by the cruise photographer. There are also two fine German color chromolithographs of the Taj Mahal, 21 postcards, two trade cards and 14 printed photographs. A wide range of gelatin silver prints of 16 Indian cities and important sites, including the Cave Temples at Elephanta Island, Maharajah's Palace at Jaipur, the palace at Amber, the Panch Mahal at Fatehpur, mosque at Fatehpur, Agra Fort, Pearl Mosque of Agra, the Jasmine Tower, the Taj Mahal, the Tomb of Akbar, the Jumma Masjid ("second largest [mosque] in world"), Fort Delhi and palace of Moghul Emperors, Pearl Mosque of Delhi, Kutab Minar, Quwatul Islam Mosque, Tomb of Humayun Moghul, bathing in the Ganges, Burning Ghat, the Hindu Golden Temple, the Victoria Memorial, the Jain Temple, the Marble Palace, Darjeeling mountain views, Mount Everest, Sriringam Temple and Grounds, the Great Juggernaut, and temples and palace of Madura.Volume I with 34pp of printed text pertaining to the history and significant sites to be visited. The photographs include: Bombay (23 real photographs), Jaipur (13 real photographs), Amber (9 real photographs), Fatehpur Sikri (15 real photographs), the Taj Mahal (14 real photographs) and Agra (14 real photographs). Volume II: New and Old Delhi (37 real photographs), Benares (28 real photographs), Calcutta (35 real photographs), "Thru India, pictures by Mrs. Everett (6 real photographs), Darjeeling (17 real photographs) "India" (3 real photographs), Madras (12 real photographs), Tanjore (4 real photographs), Srirangam (11 real photographs), Trichinopoly (2 real photographs), Madura (16 real photographs) and "Leaving India" (3 real photographs). Most of the photographs are gelatin silver prints. The photographs are captioned with white hand lettered captions, laid down on black album card stock, housed in black loose leaf binders. The passenger list at the front of Volume I includes General Milton J. Foreman, hero of the Spanish American War and WWI, and one of the organizers of the American Legion. Photographs measure primarily 4 3/4 x 3 3/4" with some larger images. Fine with crisp images on all photographs, [Attributes: Hard Cover]
