Plan Of The Town And Township Of Liverpool With The Environs
W.S.Sherwood / J.Gore / J.H.Franks - Liverpool - - 80 x 50 - Original colour - A large and detailed plan of Liverpool published by J.Gore of Castle Street in Liverpool. The map is a truly local publication as it was also engraved in Liverpool - by J.H.Franks on Commutation Row - and the title asks the reader "To Note The Township Of Everton Surveyed By W.S.Sherwood". The Mersey is shown along the lower edge of the map and original colour defines the districts and townships, which are also referenced in a key at lower left. An inset plan beneath the map's title shows Liverpool in 1725 and the difference in size is quite startling. Liverpool would continue to grow through the Industrial Revolution and this precise map is a fascinating snapshot of the city in 1821. Minor marginal tear repaired. COPAC lists just two examples of the map; at the British Library and Glasgow. A rare map on a single sheet and not dissected, mounted or folded.
