Passing Events Or The Tail Of The Comet Of 1853
G.Cruikshank / D.Bogue - London - - 38.5 x 18.5 - Uncoloured - This spectacular steel plate etching by the renowned artist and caricaturist George Cruikshank shows the comet of 1853 in cartographic form with the face of the Prince Regent and with the tail populated with the events and significant features of the age; Albert Smith's lecture on Mont Blanc, a prize cattle show, the City Corporation Commission, a Horse Lottery and Grant Betting Stand and "Wild's" Great Globe in Leicester Square are just some of the features depicted. The etching was published in "Cruikshank's Magazine". The magazine lasted only two issues, January and February 1854, with this magnificent image as the frontispiece of the first issue. Originally folded into the journal this example has expert restoration to minor areas of paper weakness. A fascinating item! The steel printing plate for this etching is still in existence and is held by Princeton -http://blogs.princeton.edu/graphicarts/2009/08/cruikshank_printing_plate_fo r.html
