Untitled [The Thames From The Tower To Southend And Whitstable]
J.Baker - London - - 14.5 x 18 - Uncoloured - A fascinating and charming pictorial map showing the Thames and its banks from the Tower in London to Southend in Essex and Whitstable in Kent. The whole is populated with profile views of the important buildings and features - thus the London region (the lower part of the map) is a sea of ship masts and riggings. The map is dated 1806 and is similar in style to the road maps published in James Baker's "The Imperial Guide With Picturesque Plans..." that had been published in 1802. This example appears to be the first of a new series or "second edition" whose publication was apparently never completed. It is thus very rare. Trimmed close with protective margins added and evidence of album mounting to verso, otherwise in good condition.
