Presbiteri Iohannis Sive Abissinorum Imperii Descriptio
Anonymous - Venice? - - 24 x 17.5 - Uncoloured - A fascinating and beautifully engraved reduced-size copy of Abraham Ortelius' famous map of East and Central Africa, showing the kingdom of the fabled Christian king, Prester John. The plate which is unsigned copies the original, produced by Ortelius in 1573, and appears to be a proof state of a map for which we can find no record and which was probably never actually published. The paper, watermarked with a crescent upon a star above a crown, is thin and typical of Italian publications of the last part of the sixteenth century, and the plate's size matches that of several other maps published in works by D'Anania, Botero and others. With blank borders and a larger blank area of unused copper above the map (where other similar maps have their titles) the elegant print, which is fine and crisp, appears unfinished. A possibly unique survival.
