Typus Orbis Terrarum
J.C.Morss (Morff) - Nuremberg? - - Plate 23 x 19 - Uncoloured - An unusual and interesting double-hemisphere world map, seemingly unrecorded by Shirley. The engraving has the signature of Johann Caspar Morss/Morff for whom the only close reference we can find is as an engraver named, probably incorrectly, as "Morff" (the "ss" being misread as "ff") who contributed to a work of 1703. The double-hemisphere map appears above a group of six engraved botanical illustrations on the same plate and bears every similarity to the sequence of Paris publications begun by Bertius in c.1630 (Shirley 322) and continued through Boisseau in 1643 (Shirley 359), De Fer in c.1660 (Shirley 399) and others. The map shows California as an island, a "Great Southern Continent" and so on - all features typical of the period. On this basis and style we have dated the map as late seventeenth entury. Obviously rare.
