A New And Correct Map Of The World, ... The Newest Discoveries .
H.Moll - London - - 97.5 x 56 - Original colour - A grand double-hemisphere world map, printed on two sheets joined. "A New And Correct Map Of The World, Laid Down According To The Newest Discoveries, And From The Most Exact Observations, By Herman Moll Geographer. Printed For H.Moll, D.Midwinter At Ye 3 Crowns In St Pauls Church Yard And By T.Bowles Map & Print Seller Next To Ye Chapter House In St Paul's Church Yard 1709. Sold By H.Moll Over Against Devereux Court, Without Temple Bar, And By P.Overton, Map And Printseller Near St Dunstan's Church Fleet Street". The map shows a precise depiction of California as an island, despite Moll's claims of being based on the "newest observations", and illustrates partial coastlines in the Pacific. The geographic detail is accompanied by diagrams of planetary systems and the sun and moon in each corner. A large dedication to George II appears between the hemispheres at the bottom of the page and a single, north-polar hemisphere is given in the equivalent position above the main hemispheres. This map was issued separately by Moll from c.1709, implied by the engraved date, and also appeared in his composite atlas titled "The World Describ'd, Or A New And Correct Sett Of Maps ..." (or similar) with a variety of imprints. As the map still has a printed date, we suspect this to be a relatively early edition of the map (the very earliest had the imprint of Moll, Midwinter and Davies - this example is Moll, Midwinter and Bowles). Paper reinstatement to edges and corners, and other minor, expert repairs. One of the best known and most sought-after English, large-scale maps. - cf. Shirley, M.A.B.L, T.Moll-4a.
