J.Hondius - Amsterdam - - 50 x 37.5 - Uncoloured - A fine example of this famous map prepared by Jodocus Hondius as one of the new plates added to his edition of Mercator's "Atlas" from 1606. The map shows a north-west/south-east aligned west coast of North America while the east coast above Florida is rather convoluted. The "Great Southern Continent" is retained and a newly described river system appears in South America. Of importance is the fact that this is the earliest map to locate the oldest European settlement in North America - St Augustin, founded in 1565. This handsome map is also renowned for the decorative vignettes which include a kayak, native canoe, Chinese junk and European ships and, at lower left, a vivid depiction of South American natives preparing a brew from the mandioca plant. - Burden, The Mapping Of North America, 150.
