Midle-Sex Described With The Most Famous Cities ...
J.Speed / H.Overton - London - - 49.5 x 38 - Coloured - An uncommon and late re-issue of John Speed's map of the county of Middlesex with inset plans of London and Westminster and views of St Peter's (Westminster Abbey) and St Paul's (pre-Wren, of course). The original plate has been augmented with the addition of engraved roads and Overton's imprint. John Speed (1552-1629) is arguably the most famous English cartographer of any period as a result of his atlas "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine" in which this map first appeared in 1612. Such was the popularity of the atlas and the maps contained therein that the life of the copper printing plate continued into the eighteenth century. With attractive later hand colour and minor paper restoration.
