La Figure Du Monde Universel
S. Munster - Basel - - 38 x 26 - coloured - A famous and important map of the world. The map appeared in editions of Sebastian Munster's "Cosmographia" from 1550 onwards (replacing a previous map of the world). The new map was engraved by the woodcutter David Kandel, whose initials appear at lower left. This was the standard, understood view of the world until the publication of Ortelius' map in 1570. "Terra Florida" (North America) is shown almost cut in two by the Straits of Verrazano, while "Zipangri" (Japan) appears in a very narrow Pacific Ocean. The oval projection is surrounded by clouds and wind heads while sea monsters and a sailing ship decorate the world's oceans. French text indicates an actual publication date between 1556 and 1568. - Shirley, Mapping Of The World, 92.
