Angliae Et Hiberniae Accurata Descriptio
A.Ortelius / J.B.Vrients - Antwerpen - - 56.5 x 43 - Coloured - Johann Baptist Vrients' magnificent map of England and Wales including a genealogical tree from William the Conqueror to the time of publication and James I. The map first appeared in 1606 and this is state two of the map, without a dedication to James I, that first appeared in 1609 - this particular example is a 1612 Spanish text edition. Johann Baptist Vrients, a printer in Antwerp, had bought the Ortelius atlas plates in 1601 and published his own editions of the "Theatrum ..." (including the only English language edition in 1606). After Vrients' death in 1612 the plates were sold to the Plantijn firm. Of the new maps added to the "Theatrum..." whilst Vrients oversaw publication, this of England and Wales is perhaps one of the most decorative and sought-after. Margins repaired. - Van Den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas Maps, 17.
