M.Quad - Cologne - - 29 x 20.5 - Coloured - This uncommon map of South East Asia, printed from a copperplate, was published in Germany by one of the few non-Low Country mapmakers of the period. Flemish and Dutch map publishers dominated the industry at this time although a handful of others tried, unsuccessfully, to compete. Although the style of Matthias Quad's map is distinctive, the detail is taken from Dutch productions, in this case the work of Abraham Ortelius. Of particular interest is the circular form for Japan, the large outline of New Guinea, whose shape remained undefined for over 150 years, and the reference to "Beach" - an early indication of the Australian continent. The map has attractive hand colour.
