Untitled [Chart Of Torbay And The South Devon Coast]
G.Collins - London - - 57 x 45 - Coloured - An important early sea chart of the South Devon coast from Salcombe to Exmouth, with an extraordinary dedicational cartouche incorporating a view of William III's landing at Brixham. Restoration to upper corners. Captain Greenvile Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" was the first systematic survey of the British coastline, and the first sea atlas produced in London from original surveys. Collins was appointed to the task by Charles II in 1681 and published his first edition in 1693. The charts were reissued, with very little updating, until as late as 1792.
