Souvenir Typescript of the Presidential Oath of Office, signed by 34th President DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
- EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. (1890-1969). American military commander and thirty-fourth president of the United States. Souvenir typescript of the oath of office, signed. ("Dwight D. Eisenhower"). ½p. 8vo. N.p., N.d. "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." In 1952, Eisenhower, the celebrated NATO commander, defeated Democratic rival and former Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson in a landslide victory. Extremely popular and despite a 1955 heart attack and speculation that he would not seek a second term, Eisenhower was easily nominated at the August 1956 Republican National Convention. The subsequent presidential contest became a rematch of the 1952 election with Eisenhower easily defeating Stevenson a second time. Eisenhower held office during the tense years of the Cold War, and his experiences during World War II and as NATO's commander convinced him of the importance of military preparedness and possible use of force. Simultaneously, he used diplomacy to navigate through the perilous events of world politics and, in so doing, ended the Korean War to oversee an era of peace and prosperity not experienced by Americans since the 1920s. Eisenhower took the oath of office twice: at the Forty-Second Inaugural Ceremonies on January 20, 1953 and at the Forty-Third Inaugural Ceremonies, January 20, 1957. Our signed souvenir typescript on un-watermarked, thick paper is darkly signed and in excellent condition; never folded. * All our items are sent via Federal Express.
