Volume I contains the Premiere Partie and is a third edition with an illustration to frontispiece and 23 further plates, 14 of which are folding. Volume II contains the Seconde Partie, is a Nouvelle edition and contains a frontispiece plus 34 folding plates. Volume III contains the rest of the Seconde Partie and is also a Nouvelle edition. It has a frontispiece followed by a half title and title page, and 32 plates, 31 of which are folding. The engraved plates depict a wide variety of subjects, including butterflies, sea creatures, plants and flowers, machinery, maps and scientific diagrams. Noel-Antoine Pluche (13 November 1688 19 November 1761), known as the abbe Pluche, was a French priest best-known for this work. Pluche, son of a baker, was born in Rheims, in a street now named after him. He became a teacher of rhetoric. The Bishop of Laon made him head of the town's college, a post he accepted to escape judicial consequences of opposing the papal bull Unigenitus (1713). He withdrew in 1749 to La Varenne-Saint-Maur, near Paris, where he died. His Spectacle de la Nature was published in 1732, and widely translated all over Europe. Although it influenced many to become naturalists, it was a work of popularisation, not of science. With a previous owner's inscription to each front free endpaper of one John Brooke. Condition: In calf bindings. Externally, sound with shelfwear and cracking to five joints. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean but with creasing and curling to many of the fold-out plates. Overall: GOOD [Attributes: Hard Cover]
