12mo, (140x95mm), xviii, 362, [2], 14pp, engr. frontis. and 11 plates, bound in contemporary red morocco, the centre of each cover onlaid with a panel of green morocco, and covered with an all-over pattern of gilt roses surrounded by a border of oak leaves and acorns. Smooth spine, divided into compartments by onlays of green morocco, tooled in gilt with roses, turn-ins tooled in gilt with palmette and vine roll tools, end leaves of watered-silk, a.e.g. 6 red and green silk markers. Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper "To The Right Honorable The Lady Louisa Stuart From Her Affectionate Nephew Evelyn Stuart. London Thursday Morning 1. January 1829" This is one of a group of 32 annual keepsakes, dated between 1828 and 1832 and all with the same design of binding, that we purchased about 1961. All contained the same donor's inscription, always dated 1st of January of the relevant year. Lady Louisa (1757-1851) was the youngest of the eleven children of John Stuart, third earl of Bute, and grand-daughter, through her mother, of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. She died unmarried at the age of 94, having moved in the the highest literary circles for most of her life.Of Lord Evelyn Stuart (1773-1842), fifth son of the first Marquess of Bute, little is known.For more information on this group of bindings see Nixon : The Oldaker Collection of British Bookbindings in Westminster Abbey Library,1982. item 38.
