London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1891 - 3 volumes, octavo. Original morocco-grained green cloth, titles to spines gilt, titles and decorative borders to front boards in black, yellow coated endpapers. Spine ends and corners a little worn, sides rubbed, endpapers apparently relined at an early date, still a good set. Without the terminal advert leaf in vol. 1 found only in a small minority of copies (no priority). First edition, first issue in the original cloth without the cancel title page stating second edition. One of fewer than 1000 copies. From the library of the bibliographer of Victorian fiction, Walter E. Smith, with his lightly pencilled ownership inscriptions to the front free endpaper of each volume.
