London; Country Life -1936 1921 - Nine volumes, folio (approx 385 x 270mm or 15 1/4" x 10 1/2"), recently bound in quarter red morocco over marbled paper covered boards, gilt ruled raised bands, lettered and numbered direct in two compartments, the remaining four compartments fully gilt decorated in a 'jigsaw' pattern, all edges gilt save for one volume with just top edge gilt, new cream endpapers. The nine volumes are as follows: Period I - vol I: Norman and Plantagenet,1066-1485, 1st edition, 1921, frontispiece, some 403 text illustrations of interiors, external views and measured drawings and plans, ppxxxix, 338, advert leaf. Period II - vol I: Early Tudor, 1485-1558, 2nd edition,1929: frontispiece, some 475 illustrations, lx, 396pp. Period I and II - vol II: Mediaeval and Early Tudor,1066-1558, 1st edition, 1936: frontispiece, some 556 illustrations, xlviii, 364pp, two very small adhesion marks pp9-10 affecting two photographs. Period III - vol I: Late Tudor and Early Stuart, 1558-1649, 2nd edition,1929: frontispiece, some 475 illustrations, pp lvi, 378, advert leaf. Period III - voI II: Late Tudor and Early Stuart, 1558-1649: 1st edition, 1927: frontispiece, some 537 illustrations, xxii, 423pp. Period IV - vol I: Late Stuart, 1649-1714, 2nd impression, 1929: frontispiece, some 546 illustrations, ppxl, 430, advert leaf. Period IV - vol II. The Work of Sir John Vanbrugh and his School, 1699-1736, 2nd edition 1929 (written with Christopher Hussey): frontispiece, some 542 illustrations, lxiv, 333pp. Period V - vol I. Early Georgian, 1714-1760, 1st edition, 1921: frontispiece, some 448 illustrations, ppxliii, 357, advert leaf. Period VI - vol I: Late Georgian, 1760-1820, 1st edition, 1926: frontispiece, some 659 illustrations, xl, 402pp. Save for the slight adhesion damage noted above, a few small tears in margins without loss, a very good and certainly very handsome set of this extraordinary survey of the grandest examples of the English country house.
