Vile Bodies.
London: Chapman and Hall Ltd., 1930 - Octavo. Original black and red snakeskin cloth, titles to spine gilt, title page printed in red and black. Housed in a red quarter morocco slipcase and red cloth chemise. Spine a touch darkened, minor wear to spine ends and corners, spine ends discretely reinforced, text block slightly strained in a couple of places, margins gently toned. An excellent copy. First edition, presentation copy, eponymously inscribed on the front endpaper: "For Marcel Boulestin/ from / Evelyn Waugh / 'For this body which you call Vile / our Lord Jesus Christ was not / ashamed to die'". Vile Bodies, Waugh's second published novel, sold splendidly well upon publication, going through seven printings in as many weeks, and established Waugh as the pre-eminent novelist of his generation, while gaining him entry into the fashionable drawing rooms of Mayfair. Inscribed copies of the first printing of this Waugh's most 'modern' novel are scarce indeed, we know of a mere handful. [Attributes: First Edition]
