Elogio Historico de Jose Banks, Lid na Sessao Publica da Academia Real das Sciencias de 22 de Janeiro de 1843
Lisboa: na Typografia da Mesma Academia, 1848. Title page a little dusted, else a very tall and entirely uncut copy in excellent condition, wrappers a bit chipped.. Quarto, 11 pages, laid paper watermarked 1843, original plain paper wrappers. Attractive copy of a very unusual work, a paper presented in Portuguese in 1843 on the life of Sir Joseph Banks.Manoel Maria José da Costa was an influential man of letters and scientist, for many years secretary of the Academia Real des Sciencias de Lisboa. Although not as well-known as Banks, his writings show a similar range and deal with a broad variety of scientific subjects, so it is possible to speculate that da Costa saw some sort of affinity with the illustrious Banks. Having said that, the mind boggles at just how Sir Joseph would have responded to being referred to throughout da Costa's lecture as "José".This is a highly uncommon pamphlet, and seemingly not known to the Banks scholar Harold B. Carter (see his Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) A guide to biographical and bibliographical sources).
