Black & Batchelder, Boston 1859 - Salt print: 7-1/2" x 5-1/4" (oval). Mount: 12-7/8" x 11" (oval). Brown infamous for the Harper's Ferry raid, ultimately resulting in his capture & execution by hanging, December 2, 1859. Offered here a salt print, three quarter length portrait of John Brown, which reproduces a daguerreotype attributed to Martin M. Lawrence. A prior owner note states this photograph issued by Batchelder was done so with Brown's concurrence & authorization. Photograph yellowed & faded. Mount chipped at top & right edge. Good, at best. Publisher's original deluxe, embossed black full-leather binding. AEG. Pale yellow eps 1st printing thus. Facsimile signature of Brown underneath the portrait. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
