Penfield, GA: W. & W.C. Richards, 1842. First edition. 4to. (6), 44 pp. Illustrated with 12 engraved plates and an extra-engraved title page. Howes R-252: "Originally issued in five parts, 1841-1842." Sabin 70963: "A second series was projected, but not published." De Renne catalogue II, p. 484. Harwell Georgiana 32: "One of the most sumptuous of all early Georgia works ... in essence an outgrowth of articles in the Richards' 'Orion' magazine, it gave T.A. Richards a superior vehicle for displaying his artistic talents. It is for his illustrations, from romantic North Georgia vales to stark buildings of architectural distinction, that this publication is remembered and held in esteem." Larwood I, p. 17: "For the first time was captured pictorially the natural beauty of the state's landscape." Original gilt-stamped decorated cloth, a.e.g. Old light circle stain on front board; foxing, especially to plates; offset to tissue guards from plates. Still a very good copy, the best we've seen.
