They note that the limits proposed for this work originally 'have been exceeded by about one fourth'. The work has the contributions of more than two hundred contributors. To this volume there is also a list of contributors. The editor of this work is stated to volume XXVII as George Long. George Long was an English classical scholar. Collated, complete in 27 volumes with an additional two supplementary volumes. ThePennyCyclopaedia contains a wealth of knowledge, and the novelist Herman Melville is known to have used thework whilst writing his famed Moby-Dick andseveral of his other novels. Condition: In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed, particularly to the spines and joints. Some volumes have harsher rubbing than others. Bumping to the extremities of all volumes due to therubbing. A very small lossto the head and tail of spines to most volumes, worse to volumes VI, VIII, XVI andXX. Marks to the boards of all volumes including a few light ink spots. Both hingesto volume IIare slightly strained but firm. Small crack to front joint to volumeII. Loss to the top of page 3-4 to volume I. Front hinge to volume VI is slightly strained but firm. Front hinge tovolumeIX is tender, with small cracks to the front joint. Front hinge to volume X is slightly strained but firm. Front hinges to volumes XII, XIII, XIV, XVII, XIX, XXVI and XXIXare tender. Rear hinge to volume XIX is tender. Prior owner's inscription to the front pastedown of volumes XI and XX,Ruth Smith. Same person's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to volume XIV. Small worm holes the size of a pin prick to the backstrips of several volumes. Several small worm holes to the spine and joints of volumes XXVII-XXIX, not affecting the internals. Slight offsetting totitle page of volume XXV. Prior owner's light pencil plan drawing to the rear endpaper of volume XVII. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound. Page 107-110 gathering to volume II is loosening. Pages are generally bright, with a few ink spills to the endpapers. Spotting to the first and last few pages with the odd spots throughout. Small ink spill to the text of page 475 of volume XXII, partially obstructing four words ofthe text, butis still readable. Small ink spill to page 464 of volume XVII only affecting one letter. Overall: GOOD..
