Philadelphia: George Barrie, [c.1900] - 24 volumes, octavo (215 x 140 mm). Contemporary green morocco by Stikeman for Brentano's, titles to spine gilt, spine decorated gilt in compartments, covers elaborately gilt, wide turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Spines toned, occasional rubbing to extremities; an excellent set. Frontispieces in coloured and uncoloured states, richly illustrated with all plates in two states, all with tissue-guards. Limited edition, number 262 of 1,000 sets printed on japon; this set printed for Mr Thomas Breslin. An attractive and richly illustrated work on European court intrigue, which includes works on the courts of Marie Antoinette and Napoleon. With the bookplate of William Lawrence O'Neill (1935–2016) to the front pastedowns, and his initialled inscriptions dated December 1932 to the front free binder's blanks of vols. V and IX. From the library, though unmarked as such, of Walter Ward Jr.
