London: Trüber & Co., 1884 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spines gilt, edges untrimmed, brown coated endpapers, pocket to rear pastedown of vol. 1. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown of vol. 2. Stamp to title page verso and p. 33. Slight rubbing to extremities, minor bumps to tips, a couple of faint marks to boards, top edges dust toned; a very good set. Large folded map in pocket to rear pastedown. First edition of this expansive compendium of South American history, in the grey cloth variant binding. Watson travelled widely as a British diplomat allowing him to write a number of regional histories; "it is on of the advantages of foreign legations, that now and then a man connected with them is found intelligent enough and industrious enough to study the history and character of a people". Watson served in South America from 1865 to 1869. This work was reviewed by Richard F. Burton in The Academy, where he describes Watson as "a more interesting figure than his book". With the bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason (1869–1942) to the front pastedowns. Gleason was an American Catholic priest, scholar and book collector.
