The Antiquary
Edinburgh - Archibald Constable and Co. and Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown., 1816 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Asecond edition of Sir Walter Scott's The Antiquary. Bound in the publisher's original boards and spine labels, with adverts. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (1771 1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. The Antiquary (1816) is Scott's gothic novel, redolent with family secrets, stories of hidden treasure and hopeless love, with a mysterious, handsome, young man, benighted aristocracy and a night-time funeral procession to a ruined abbey. The romance and mystery is counterpoised by some of Scott's more down-to-earth characters, and grittily unromantic events. Condition: The binding is firm. The hinges are starting. Some of the boardsattachedby the cords only and may detach in the post. The rear board of volume two detached. Some of the inner hinges are strained. There is some significant wear to the extremities, including bumping with some loss and a couple of stains. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with some mild spotting on the first and last couple of pages and the occasional handling mark or spot. There is a newspaper clipping tipped in the front of volumeone and ink signatures on the half titles. Overall the condition is good with very good interior..
