- Abbey, Travel 558; Cordier, Japonica, col. 469; Howgego, 1800-1850, H3. First edition of an account of a voyage to the west coast of Korea made by the Scottish Captain Basil Hall (1788-1844). In 1815 Hall was sent to China to accompany Lord Amherst's embassy. "During this voyage the vessel surveyed the Yellow Sea (=Hwang Hai), visiting Canton and sailing as far as the coasts of Korea" (Howgego). The two ships, the Alceste and Lyra obtained detailed information on the area, also visiting the Ryukyu Archipelago. This account contains entries about the specifics of Korean lifestyles, local vocabulary, including Korean, and hydrographic charts and nautical facts such as records of sea currents and meteorological data. The illustrations of scenery and costumes were made by William Havell (1782-1857), the eminent artist who accompanied the embassy, from sketches made on the spot by C.W. Browne, midshipman on board the Alceste. The last 70 pages of the book contain the Vocabulary of the language spoken at the great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japanese Sea by lieutenant Herbert John Clifford, from whose notes parts of the main text derived as well. Some foxing thoughout, plates browned. Overall in good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]
