Publisher's blue cloth, stamped in blind and gilt, gilt spine titles. First volume with minor edge wear, spine head a bit frayed, corners bumped. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown. Tape repairs to gutters of second volume, large folding map with ink library stamps and some tape repairs. Very good. A scarce biography of John Davis, early English explorer who attempted to find a Northwest Passage in the 16th century. Contains the large folding map of the world, ca. 1600, "called by Shakspere 'The New Map, with the augmentation of the Indies'" in the second volume. GOODSPEED 218:32.
