Typed Letter Signed by RAMON MAGSAYSAY, the Philippine Politician who as President Overthrew the Communist-Led Hukbalahap Insurgency
1952 - MAGSAYSAY, RAMON. (1907-1957). Philippine politician who, first as secretary of defense and then as president of the Philippines from 1953-1957, overthrew the communist-led Hukbalahap insurgency. TLS. ("RMagsaysay"). 1p. Small 4to. Quezon City, February 12, 1952. On the imprinted stationery of the Department of National Defense. To Emil N. Dern, Jr. "Thank you for all your kind thoughts as expressed in your letter of January 6 to which I am happy to reply. Feeling honored with your wish to have an authographed [sic] picture of my humble self, I am glad to send my replica in the hope that through it, a lasting friendship between us will germinate. Please accept my warmest personal regards." Immediately following his 1950 appointment as secretary of defense, Magsaysay moved to quell the Huk rebels, whose anti-government insurgency had greatly destabilized the Philippines. In 1953, the year after our letter was written, he resigned as secretary of defense and, having joined the Nationalist party, successfully challenged the incumbent president, Elpidio Quirino. He returned as secretary of defense to accept the surrender of the Huk leader in May 1954, but congressional and intra-party conflicts as well as his close friendship with the United States hindered his ability to bring about substantive reform, an effort cut short by his untimely death in a plane crash on March 17, 1957. Folded and in very good condition; uncommon. * All our items are sent via Federal Express. Additional postage may be requested. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
