The Life and Raigne of King Henry the Eighth
Thomas Whitaker, London 1649 - The 1649 1st printing, still boasting its original spine, with the lovely, elaborate gilt-tooling and bordering. 5 raised bands, bright gilt-titling. Light chipping at the foot of the spine, otherwise remarkably well-preserved given its distinguished age. The front and rear panels have been tastefully replaced in a similar full calf of the period (probably from the early 1700s). All else is intact and very solid: the original title page, the frontispiece (executed by T. Cecill Sculp), the endsheets and, of course, the text, which is crisp and startlingly clean (beyond its forgivable aging and light offsetting). Armorial bookplate at the front pastedown (Henry P. Marsham), minor re-inforcement (a thin, neatly-applied terricloth strip) to the front inner hinge, light wear to the outer hinges. Thick quarto, 575 pgs. of text plus "An INDEX of the main Matters couch'd in this Royall STORY" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
