Brookes' General Gazetteer Abridged Containing a Geographical Description of the Countries, Cities, Towns in the Known World
London.: B. Law, C. Dilly et al.. 1796. Six engraved maps, unpaginated (about 1 1/2 inches thick), 7 x 4 1/4 inches, leather covered boards. Front board detached, covers very worn with some loss, discoloration to lower corner of fore edge of last ten pages, otherwise text block is clean and tight. Presentation book plate of 1824 to front paste down with a few additional notations. The volume contains a short Introduction to Geography (title page and 6 numbered pages) followed by an extensive (alphabetized) Gazetteer (pages unnumbered). The volume is illustrated with six folding maps, five of which are in good clean condition: "The World" (badly folded with a small hole by the Antarctic Circle and two small spots in Siberia caused by bleed-through from ink notation on verso of front cover), "Europe", "Asia", "Africa", "North America", and "South America." Maps engraved by B. Baker. The maps are approximately 6 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches, save for "The World," which is approximately 6 3/4 x 11 inches. The impressions are strong and clear. The alphbetical listing gives descriptions of "countries, cities, towns, forts, seas, rivers, lakes, mountains, capes &c. in the Known World; with their longitude and latitude, bearings and distances from remarkable places, and the events by which they have been distinguished." There appear to be a number of library holdings, but evidently the bulk of these are microfilm copies. The “Abridged” edition is a variation on other titles identifying the Gazetteer. .
