W. R. McPhun, Glasgow 1858 - A beautiful 19th century Scottish Bible, beautifully decorated, illustrated and including commentary. All edges are gilt and a chapter index is painted on the fore edge in the style of a double fore-edge painting. "This expository Bible is the result of an endeavor to produce a popular commentary suitable for all classes and denominations of Christians" - 1st paragraph of the preface. Includes a number of beautiful copper plate engravings, and maps. Physical Attributes - Measures 17 x 10.5 x 4 cm.Leather. Richly decorated. Fillet borders surrounding a central motif on front cover. Raised spines with six compartments, five of which have fillet and floral sprays, one of which has the title in gilt.Turn-ins with gilt roll. All edges are gilt, with the chapter index painted on in the style of a double fore-edge painting. Pages - (1), frontis, xxx, 686 OT, 242 NT, 62 index, (2). Condition - See pictures. Binding has a little shelf wear at the edges. Flyleaf has strangely been pasted to the front board (with a crease), likely to cover/hide an owner's inscription I can see through the page. 1st blank unnumbered page has pencil bookseller marks. Frontispiece has foxing marks, which transferred over to title page. 1st couple of pages are dogeared. I don't see any writing or tears within the book. 908 Leather. All Edges Gilt.
