Peter Pan and Wendy
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1929. "Thumbed to Loving Death in Nurseries, Generation after Generation". [ATTWELL, Mabel Lucie, illustrator]. BARRIE, J.M. Peter Pan and Wendy. London: Hodder and Stoughton [1929]. Later edition. Royal octavo (9 3/16 x 6 1/4 inches; 233 x 160 mm.). 320 pp. Twelve mounted color plates and numerous black & white line drawings throughout the text. Original blue cloth, front cover bordered in blind, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained blue, pictorial endpapers. Some light foxing, neat ink inscription dated 1929 on front pastedown, but still a very fine copy in the original printed dust-jacket with a circular illustration (duplicating p. 51) pasted onto the front panel and price of 10/6d on front flap. "At the insistence of Sir J.M. Barrie himself Hodder & Stoughton approached Mabel Lucie [Atwell] to illustrate a gift-book edition of Peter Pan and Wendy which appeared in 1921. It became a bestseller, and rightly so, as it was to be thumbed to loving death in nurseries, generation after generation. In her role as an illustrator for children it is the most successful of her books, as it touched most enjoyably on the areas of that marvellous story in a way that children can understand and remember forever. Mabel Lucie's Peter Pan and Wendy has been compared unfavourably with Arthur Rackham's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens published in 1906. Rackham, without doubt one of the greatest illustrators of fiction, produced a very special group of pictures but to compare them with Mabel Lucie's is pointless since the appeal of each is totally different." (Chris Beetles. Mabel Lucie Atwell, p. 14).
