Collection of about 35 Offprints by David Starr Jordan
Washington DC: Smithsonian Institution. First printing. Hardcover. Good. Collection of some 30 to 35 offprints by David Starr Jordan (many written with various co-authors), dated from 1900 to 1913, all published by the Smithsonian Institution/United States National Museum. Printed paper wraps, various paginations, illustrated, clean unmarked texts, all copies about Good, these are somewhat fragile with the paper flaking occasionally when you handle them, soil/discoloration to wraps of most copies, name-stamps to some of the covers, wear to the tips and edges of most copies, a couple copies lacking covers. Still, despite all the flaws, a very uncommon collection. Digital images available upon request. David Starr Jordan (1/19/1851-9/19/1931) was the most influential of all American ichthyologists. He and his students dominated the field in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It has been said that all ichthyologists today can trace their professional ancestry back to Jordan. Most of Jordan's scientific career was spent at Indiana University (1879-1891) and Stanford University (1891-1931), but he was closely associated with the Smithsonian for much of his career. He was even offered, at different times, the positions of National Museum Director and Smithsonian Secretary, but he declined both.
