First Edition of this magnificent Italian fête book, documenting the grand festivities held in Naples, November 4-19, 1747, to celebrate the birth of Philip, first son of Charles III, King of the Two Sicilies (later King of Spain), and his wife, Maria Amelia of Saxony. The festivities were designed and conducted under the direction of celebrated architect and stage designer Vincenzo Dal Re. Fifteen large double-page and folding plates engraved by Carlo Gregori, Angelo Guiducci, Giuseppe Vasi, Felice Polanzani, N.Jardin, and Luigi Le Lorrain after designs by Dal Re variously illustrate the physical layout and decoration of the interior of the royal castle and of the Teatro San Carlo for the celebrations, banquets, and games, scenes from the parade, masquerade, grand balls, and theatrical presentations, the ‘Cuccagna’ (‘Land of Cockaigne’, an imaginary region of luxury and delight) constructed in the piazza of the royal palace, with wine fountains and food-decorated summer house and gardens intended for consumption by the populace, the façade of the ‘Castel Nuovo’, illuminated with globes of coloured glass, and the fireworks display building constructed in the piazza of the ‘Castel Nuovo’. The engraved headpiece contains a view of the Bay of Naples. Dal Re’s original drawings for the festival are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Berlin Kat. 3078. Cicognara 1515.
