R. Grant & Son, Edinburgh 1913 - Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-xiv 1-484 [485: printer's imprint] [486: blank], original gray cloth, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. "The background of this novel is the concept of an interstellar civilization of celestials which look after and guide the inhabitants of the planets. An expeditionary army of occupation of Earth by the celestials (to relieve that already there) is being assembled on the planet Eretha, around Sirius, which is spiritually in advance of Earth. The first half of the book deals with that world and the conflicts brought on by the neighboring, warlike, planet Sardonics. Some science fiction elements are introduced, and the book, although mainly allegorical, is an early contribution to the development of the galactic empire concept predominant in modern science fiction." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, pp. 127-28. A. W. Kerr (1844- ?) wrote several books on banking and one or two on religious topics. SPACE: A MIRAGE advances Kerr's theories on the salvation of mankind by imbuing the individual with the "principles of the higher life." The book presents a "detailed eutopia stressing religion, the simple life, and the family." - Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, pp. 153-54. Locke, Voyages in Space 117. Reginald 08202. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends, top edge of text block dusty, a clean, bright, nearly fine copy with bright gold stamping on spine. A very nice copy of a scarce book seldom found in decent condition. (#150843) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
