Three Cities.
London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,, 1933. Translated by Edwin and Willa Muir. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black. With the dust jacket. Spine sunned, a few faint spots to front board. An excellent copy in the dust jacket with a touch of chipping at head of spine. First UK edition, first impression, the Gollancz archive copy with their pencil-mark to the front panel of the dust jacket. Asch's magnum opus, "the first of his works to move far beyond shtetl and ghetto - though Jews continue to receive most of his attention", was originally published in Yiddish as Farn Mabul (Before the Flood, 1929-31). "Translated immediately into six languages, Three Cities was widely acclaimed … Asch's first bestseller in England and the United States assured the English translation of his later works and their reviews in important magazines". While the Muirs did not know Yiddish, they were able to prepare their own English translation from the German. (Siegel, The Controversial Sholem Asch, pp. 88 & 96). Highly uncommon with the dust jacket.
