Fatal Revenge; or, the Family of Montorio, a Romance. By Dennis Jasper Murphy [pseud]
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1807 - 3 vols, 12mo, green half morocco period style by Philip Dusel, marbled paper boards, gilt decorations and lettering. Bound without the leaf of publisher's advertisements in vol. 3; half-titles apparently not called for, as discussed by Sadleir. ? The first book by Irishman Charles Robert Maturin (1782-1824), a high Gothic novel with terror, horror, palace intrigues and blood curdling scenes, set in 17th century Italy. Together with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Maturin's own later novel Melmoth the Wanderer (1820), Fatal Revenge is one of the major influences of the Gothic genre. In his six-page preface, Maturin writes about the purpose of such novels and his determination to produce the most powerful "source of emotion in the whole mental frame . . . the fear arising from objects of invisible terror.". Some spots and stains throughout, particularly to the title-pages; fine copy. Garside, Raven and Sch?werling 1807:42; Sadleir 1664; Wolff 4648; NCBEL III, 746 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
