Coxhead, 1816. - 1816 Dance of Death Hans Holbein Hollar Engravings OCCULT Macabre Skeletons ART 33 INCREDIBLE Color Copper Etchings / SEE PHOTOS Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497 – 1543) was a German artist and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style. He is best known as one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. He also produced religious art, satire, and Reformation propaganda, and made a significant contribution to the history of book design. He is called "the Younger" to distinguish him from his father, Hans Holbein the Elder, an accomplished painter of the Late Gothic school. The famous designs, for his Dance of Death series, were drawn in 1526 while he was in Basel. Václav Hollar (1607 – 1677), was a Bohemian etcher, known in England as Wenceslaus. Hollar produced a variety of works; his plates number some 2740, and include views, portraits, ships, religious subjects, heraldic subjects, landscapes, and still life in many different forms. Wenceslaus Hollar first published his 30 copperplate adaptions of Holbein's dark allegory in 1651. The 1816 edition incorporates the 30 plates, plus engravings of Holbein and Hollar. The striking frontis is a copy of Hollar's "The Dance of Death Procession," originally engraved for a 1658 history of St. Paul's Cathedral. The 1816 edition, published at the waning of the gothic moment, is most notable for its bold and painstakingly hand colored plates. What an incredible book! This book has 33 colored engravings depicting the Dance of Death series by Hans Holbein, engraved by Hollar.
