Prevost was personally responsible for twohumiliations: the with-drawl under fire after a naval victory atSackett's Harbour and a similar retreat at Plattsburg where the Canadiannaval flotilla was defeated on 11 Sept. 1814. He was summoned to Englandin 1815. On arrival there he found that his conduct had been condemnedby a naval court. He demanded a court martial but died on 5 Jan. 1816,a week before the date set for the trial. His family tried for many yearsto obtain a hearing, feeling sure that his memory could be vindicated,but their requests met with refusal. The work presents evidence to refutecharges made against him and includes extensive documentation. The workis attributed to E.B. Brenton, Prevost's Canadian secretary. .
