A CHILD OF THE SHORE.
London & New York: John Lane: The Bodley Head,. 1905. original burgundy cloth, front and spine panels stamped in white, fore-edge untrimmed.. 1912 Christmas gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Cloth a. bit spotted, some wear along outer front joint, scattered foxing to. text block, a very good copy. A very scarce book. (#151869). First edition. "Supernatural romance set in eighteenth century Cornwall. A child conceived by witchcraft is in rapport with the sea-folk who dwell down among the black weeds. Strangely evocative imagery within a fairly conventional plot of a maiden seduced and abandoned." - Robert Knowlton. John Ruyle comments: "Changeling woman born of the sea returns from death as mermaid to reclaim her love. Witchcraft, haunted seaweed, ancient legends dating back to Baal worshippers. All in all very good, though overwritten." Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963) or Reginald (1978; 1992).
